Michael Evans: Sports Diplomacy - How Basketball Can Change the World
Michael Evans, a native of Weston, is the 29 year old founder of Full Court Peace, a nonprofit that uses basketball as a tool of diplomacy around the world. He holds an MA from Harvard’s School of Education and its Kennedy School of Government. At Hamilton College he was on the varsity basketball team, then played as a professional in Belfast, Northern Ireland where he formed and coached the first “mixed” high school boys’ basketball team, composed of equal numbers of Catholics and Protestants from segregated schools. He now travels to and from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico building a demilitarized zone of basketball courts for local youth — and also to Havana, Cuba improving Cuban-American relations through the sport.

Rob Reeves : Building What Matters
The CEO of Westport’s Family Y since January 2009, Rob Reeves began his 32 year “Y” career after receiving a B.S.in Physical Education from Springfield College. He will give us an update on the project of moving the Y to their Mahackeno property in order to continue the mission of enriching our community by developing the potential of every individual, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. Rob will also explain how the Y is reaching out to local foundations, businesses and individuals with the means to invest in the Y’s future and how a public grass roots campaign will follow the initial fundraising efforts.

Cinema: The next in the Foreign Film Series will be Le Grand Voyage, written and directed by Ismaël Ferroukhi, and winner of the Lion of the Future Award at the 2004 Venice Film Festival. This French-Moroccan film (108 minutes, English subtitles), highlights the deep generational and cultural gaps between a modern young Arab preparing for his college entrance exams and his devoutly religious father as they embark on a challenging pilgrimage trip by car from France to Saudi Arabia. Let’s Carpool and Go! On Wednesday, February 22 we'll be off to the Brandt Foundation in Greenwich for an exciting and unusual sculpture exhibit by David Altmejd, a renowned
Canadian sculptor. View piles of coconuts collected in corners like furry cosmic eggs, see plaster heads that tear open and emerge from walls and canvases! After the museum we will lunch at Pasta Vera on Greenwich Avenue. We will meet at Trader Joe's at 10:00 am for an 11:00 tour. The museum is free but plan on giving $5.00 to your driver for gas. Wednesday, May 16: Springtime Guided Tour of Central Park & Luncheon at Sardi's.
A special trip with a unique and expert guide. Our tour will be slow-paced with rest & comfort stops as needed along our route. Luncheon at Sardi's will
follow prior to our return trip. Cost is $103 per person, all inclusive.

Wednesday, June 13: The American Ballet Theatre's Firebird performed in the Met at Lincoln Center, preceded by a luncheon at the elegant Firebird Restaurant, including a tour of the building which reflects the extensive knowledge & passion for Russian art, literature and cuisine. Cost is $149, all inclusive.

Sunday, July 8: Tanglewood and The Berkshires with Luncheon at the Cranwell Resort. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops will be featuring Bernadette Peters with her singular style. Cost is $140, all inclusive. $75 per person deposit due ASAP to reserve. Final payment due before Friday, June 1.

September 9 - 17: Nine-day Danube River Cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg, through 4 countries.

About General Meetings

General Meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of the month, September to June, usually at the Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road, Westport. (Changes appear in the monthly newsletter.) Coffee and socializing begin at 11 a.m. The meeting starts at 11:30.

These meetings feature speakers on a wide variety of topics -- from health and the arts to local, national and international issues --and are open to members and their guests.

Membership year: July 1 - June 30
Annual dues: $35 for a broad array of general meetings and smaller group activites.
Renewals: Dues notices are sent out in September. Members who have not renewed by year end are removed from the membership roster.
New members are welcome to join at any time during the year.
